Boeing Hit with Another Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
Earlier this year, eight former and current African-American employees who work at Boeing in El Segundo, California filed a lawsuit against the giant aerospace firm. The lawsuit against Boeing is seeking damages for harassment and discrimination based on gender and race in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.
All plaintiffs state that they have suffered from unfair employment actions, including failure to promote, discriminatory discipline, being hired into lower-tiered jobs than equally or comparably qualified white candidates, and failure to receive preferred job assignments which would help them receive a promotion.
Not the First Racial Discrimination Lawsuit for Boeing
This is not the first time Boeing has been hit with a racial discrimination lawsuit. In 1998, $4.5 million was paid to 43 African-American employees to settle a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Labor. The following year, Boeing agreed to pay 3,600 African-American employees $14.2 million to settle a pay-and-promotion charge (without Boeing admitting liability).
In 2004, Bloomberg reported that an internal audit of the company in 1997 revealed that women and minorities were regularly placed in a lower pay grade and function and that they received lower starting salaries.
Boeing is just one of many companies that have been accused of engaging in discriminatory practices based on race, age, and gender.
What to Do If You’ve Been Discriminated Against
If you believe you have been discriminated against, you can start by:
- Gathering and Retaining Evidence. Secure all pieces of evidence which will support your discrimination claim.
- Speak with the Company’s HR Officer. If you have been discriminated against, the law sometimes requires that the employer be put on notice of the discrimination and be given an attempt to remedy the discrimination. Speaking with the HR officer may also help you put a stop to the racial discrimination you are currently facing.
